Chirantan Patnaik did not just play games, he did something many others wouldn’t have bothered to do. He gave a damn about his passion 
and well this passion of his has landed him in the Guinness Book of Records.
He played GTA IV on his PS3 for 40 hours and twenty minutes while taking only 4, 10 minute long breaks the entire time. His record attempt finished on Sunday morning. We spoke to him on his ad-venture in the virtual world and how he survived 40 hours without sleep. Excerpts from the interview.
Tell me a little about yourself. How old are you, what do you do?
I’m 25-years-old and I have been working in an equity firm in Mumbai for a while now, after I did an MBA. I am also a qualified scuba diver and an adventure sport enthusiast.
How often do you game and for how long?
I game a lot because, by profession is quite stressful and when I do, I sit for hours together.
When did you decide to break this record?
It was a while back, I came across this record set by a gamer, a US national, Jim Patton. He had around 23 hours and I knew I could break it. So I contacted Guinness Book and they responded within 6 weeks giving me a go-ahead. But they did have a few guidelines like the attempt should be made at a place which is open to public and that there should be two independent observers etc.
I heard you never played GTA IV before. Is that true?
Ya I had never played it before, my younger brother had played it a lot though. During the record attempt there were a few times when I got stuck he and a few of my friends who had come over helped me out then.
How did you manage to stay awake for so long? Almost two days!
I am used to staying awake for so long. I used to stay awake for two days in a row when I was doing my MBA. We were under a lot of pressure, with assignments, submissions etc. So my body is used to all these. While I was playing the game I also had a few coffees and a couple of red bulls which helped to an extant. I did not have too many of these as they would have back fired after a while.
What was the toughest stage you faced while gaming for the record?
The toughest part was when friends who had come around the 20th hour started nodding off to sleep 
What was your diet apart from coffee and red bull?
I had a couple of sandwiches and I kept having dates all the while. Well, it helped 
You own a PS3 and Xbox 360. Why did you play on PS3?
I like gaming on Xbox360 a lot, but I was scared of RROD. I did not want to risk it. I have had a few cases of RROD in the past and did not want anything of that sort to affect my record-attempt.
What made you stop at 40 hours?
I decided to stop when everyone around me felt like going home. There were a few girls and it was already 2am so then I decided 40 hours is more than enough. I could have gone on for a while more
Anything else?
Yes I would like to thank my wife and my friends who were supportive of me through out. Also, I would like to add that it hurt when people said that I should get a life, on many gaming forums after reading about my attempt. Well I do have a life!
